Sapporo 5 nations vow to develop an international supply chain.
The United States, Canada, France, Japan, and the United Kingdom dedicated $4.2 billion to develop the global nuclear energy supply chain at the United Nations 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) in the United Arab Emirates.
The five countries, known colloquially as the “Sapporo 5,” released a statement outlining their support of this effort, first acknowledging “that we five nations of the G7, organized in Sapporo, are collectively responsible for 50 percent of the world’s uranium conversion and enrichment production capacity.”
The nations committed to the UN’s goal to “triple nuclear energy generation by 2050” by increasing partnerships with the private sector, avoiding Russian nuclear materials, and inviting other nations to join them in their efforts.
